SOMIEDO

The Natural Park of Somiedo is in the far north-west of Spain, about one hour's drive to the south west from Oviedo, the capital city of Asturias. The hub of the park is Pola de Somiedo, a village with several small hotels and restaurants, an information centre, and an exhibition dedicated to the preservation of the local bear population (although you are most unlikely to see any in the wild).

Somiedo is in some ways a mini version of the Picos de Europa, being part of the same range, the Cordillera Cantabrica. But it is further west, the mountains do not reach quite the same heights, and the area is more compact. But within this area there is a good variety of walks, from easy strolls through to strenuous mountain ascents. The landscape is more gentle than the Picos, and there are some beautiful valleys, in particular at Valle del Lago (the Valley of the Lake).
